Go Team Human!
I ’m from D.C , the nation’s capital. So naturally, I’m a big Redskins fan. They’ve always been my team and always will be. And we Americans are like that; we have our favorite hometown teams and we’re loyal. Rain or shine, win or lose, we stick with our team.
But it always strikes me as odd that we rarely feel the same loyalty to our greatest common denominator, the team we ALL belong to, Team Human. This is one of the few categories of life that we all have in common: we’re all human!
“Well...duh!”, you might say. But even if you’ve made that astute observation already, I wonder if you act like it. We drive through traffic cussing and gesticulating at one another as if we alone are human and the other vehicles are being driven by lobotomized wildebeasts. We dismiss others in our daily paths as less than or less important than ourselves. Why? Aren’t we all on the same team?
So much of our strife, stress, and anxiety could be eliminated the moment we see each other as teammates in the game of life and not targets of our wrath. We’re all in this together, people!
I’ve had my share of liars, troublemakers, and backstabbers, and it always shocks me how much energy and effort people put into making an enemy out of their fellow human being. Again, why?
We are all on the same team, headed to the same destination. Why make enemies out of teammates? There’s power in the team mentality! I am human, you are human. Therefore nothing human is foreign to either of us. When you tell me you’re sad, mad, glad, or constipated...I can relate! And even better, when you tell me these things, I can offer comfort, advice, or just a hug.
That’s what teammates do! They understand one another and support one another. We ‘play’ on an amazing team; Team Human. Let’s act like it. We are all sharing a common experience, a HUMAN experience. Be kind, be understanding....be human! And remember—the guy in the car in front of you who hasn’t turned off his blinker in 5 miles is human too.
